Adopted Father/Adopted Son: The Story of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette as Told by the Women Who Knew and Loved Them.
This presentation will explore the close father-son bond that developed between two of America’s greatest heroes, General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. As a 17 year old French teenager, Lafayette first raised his banner and pledged his support for the American fight for independence. Shortly after his arrival in America two years later, the 19 year old found in George Washington the mentor and “father” he never had. At the same time, the normally very reserved George Washington quickly opened his heart to this teenaged Major General and soon gained the “son” he never had.
Please join Dr. Patti Maclay from the American Friends of Lafayette, as we explore the history of these two brave American Revolutionary War heroes and the reasons that may explain why they so quickly developed the father-son bond that lasted the rest of their lives.
