Event Details
The early 1930s was a dark time in American history. The Great Depression was in full swing. Millions of people were unemployed, hungry and struggling to survive. In an effort to create jobs for some of the millions who were unemployed, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt developed a new program in 1933, called the Civilian Conservation Corps, or the “CCC.” One of the nation’s first CCC camps was located in Frederick County, Maryland, just a few miles from Gambrill State Park.
We will meet at the High Knob Nature Center (the first building on the right when entering the park at the top of the mountain) and take a step back in time to learn about the CCC and how the Corps used existing geological structures to build the park setting as it is today. This hike will not be cancelled due to weather. Please dress accordingly. This will be an easy, accessible hike, mostly on pavement.
