The Victorians have been immortalized by popular culture as stuffy and repressed, but nothing could be further from the truth. Though they espoused a culture of civility and decorum, in reality they craved scandal, gobbled up news stories about the latest crimes, and flocked to Madame Tussaud’s Chamber of Horrors. From body snatchers and Jack the Ripper to lady poisoners, the Victorians have given us some of the most ghoulish criminals—real and fictional—who we still talk about today. Journey back to 19th century Britain as we use the most notorious cases to understand the larger social and cultural contexts in which they occurred. You may even get some ideas for your upcoming Halloween costume!

A Q&A will follow.
