America only holds 25% of the world's population, yet it has the highest prison population in the world. African-Americans only make up 12% of that population but represent 33% of the federal and state prison population, clearly a disproportionate amount of people. It is because of how the prison system has shaped Black America that many Hip Hop artists are fighting for criminal justice and prison reform.
