Hyman is a mixed-blood woman of many nations, both Native, African and European descent. A former professor at Howard University and a retired pastor, she has published poetry and personal essays and performed her collection CATOCTIN SLAVESPEAK, donated to the Catoctin Furnace Historical Society. Since moving to Frederick, Hyman began examining her own indigenous heritage, especially her maternal Tidewater Virginia and Western Maryland roots and is currently crafting that heritage as a work of historical fiction entitled THEY CAME ACROSS SOUTH MOUNTAIN.

One Maryland One Book is a program of Maryland Humanities. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Maryland State Library.
